“Good design” awards 2014

This year, for the third year in a row, best Lithuanian design contest was held. On 6th May Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite presented “Good Design” awards. 

“Good Design” – is a national contest, dedicated to find the best design objects  in the country. “Lithuanian industrial design developers have ideas and are able to turn them to reality. Every year we see more and more successful cooperation between artists and manufacturers. Innovation and creativity helps to strengthen the country’s competitive advantage and to bring fame to Lithuania “, – said the President and congratulated the winners.

According to the President, design community is actively looking for an attractive and modern Lithuanian products, apparel and interior expressions. The ability to use the best of what we have to approximate rationality and functionality is the distinguishing feature of the creators of the country.

Lithuanian President wished the designers creative success and perseverance, while creating a globally recognized Lithuanian quality brand.

Winners of the contest receive only symbolic prizes and diplomas, but also acquire the right to use the label “good design” in their communication. Among the winners are famous Lithuanian companies as well – for example, brewery “Švyturys – Utena beer”,” Stumbras”,” Utenos trikotažas”, “Kalvis” and small design studios, start-ups – from clothing, furnishing items to food packaging, from chandeliers to cosmetics.

“We believe that the objects presented for the competition by their typology correctly reflects the Lithuanian industrial design and situation” – says Marius Dirgėla, contest project manager, association “Design Forum” board member. “The winners’ collection looks very Scandinavian, though. But it is already the jury’s decision”.

The entries of this year contest were assessed by Berlin’s Weissensee Academy of Design professor, journalist Lucas Verweij (Netherlands), the Latvian Design Information Centre Head Song VĪTOLIŅŠ and Danish designer Hans Sandgren-Jacobsen.

Assessed various fashion, graphic, packaging, industrial, interior, furniture, lighting, urban environmental design works created in the last two years  – already produced, fully prepared items and projects or not yet realized ideas from students.

Those who had a wish to participate in the contest had to fill in online application and send some photos of their works until March 31st.  Of these, the jury selected the 15 prizes – 12 objects and 3 projects – and 15 diploma recipients.

Winners’ works will be exhibited during festival “Design Week” until May 13th in Energy and Technology Museum in Vilnius. Later exhibition will begin a tour around Lithuania.
